The name of the theater changed with each new owner, with the most recent name Kanamaru-za (adopted in 1900) still being used as a nickname today. In 1970, after being designated as a National Important Cultural Property, the theater was moved to its current location and underwent a 4-year restoration beginning in 1972. The Shikoku Konpira Kabuki Plays, held here since 1985, have become a symbol of spring throughout Shikoku.
