Lecture outline The term G7 summit has become established, but when it was held at Chateau de Rambouillet in France in 1975, it was referred to as the ``Summit of the Advanced Industrialized Countries.'' Canada was not participating, making it a total of six countries. The majority of Japanese people were moved by the Japanese flag waving over Rambouillet Castle. Since the Rambouillet Conference was not intended for a second meeting, it was not specified as the first meeting. Japan suddenly joined the gathering of the leaders of the United States, Great Britain, Germany, and France, which had previously met in the library of the White House in the United States, and it was decided that the meeting would be held in France, where the promoter, President Giscard d'Estaing, was holding the meeting. Ta.
Japan's prime minister was Takeo Miki, the finance minister was Masayoshi Ohira, and politicians from Shikoku attended, and the foreign minister was Hiroshima's Kiichi Miyazawa. It was the first summit in Japan between three politicians from the Setouchi region. Prime Minister Miki was quite elated, saying, ``Japan was chosen to represent Asia.'' I was the youngest of the dozens of reporters accompanying me. Since then, the summit has been held every year, and the next summit to be held in Japan in 3 will be the 2023th. Over the past half century, the world situation has changed rapidly. At that time, there was a strong influence of Western decision-making institutions with the Soviet Union in mind. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia joined the group, and there was a time when the G48 was formed, but now we are once again confronting Russia over issues such as Ukraine.
Japan, which ``represents Asia,'' is now overwhelmed by China's presence in everything. With the rise of countries such as India and South Korea, Japan's role is becoming increasingly difficult. However, as the only participating country in Asia, I think it is a great opportunity for Japan to make good use of this position. (Yasuhiro Tasei)
